Information about the artist

The German graphic artist and writer Carlfriedrich Claus was born in 1930 in Annaberg. In his work he uses a kind of micro-lettering that is difficult to decipher and is usually composed to abstract structures. The themes of his work consist of language, writing and communist philosophy. He was also engaged by the interaction between subject and object, between consciousness and matter.

Claus understood himself as a convinced communist, however, he turned over and over again into conflict with the secret police.

His first exhibiton was 1964 at the Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden. In 1977 he founded the artist group Clara Mosch together with Thomas Ranft, Dagmar Ranft - Schinke, Gregor Thorsten Schade and Michael Morgner. Carlfriedrich Claus died in 1998 at the age of 67 in Chemnitz.
